no idea. probably something to do with them being cute, but also due to how they can help us in our lives. most of our favourite were involved in some sort of work.
Yes, I would say one of the reasons would be definitley cuteness. I saw a documentary recently on BBC, and it very well explains how our emotional responses vary considering the cuteness of an animal. Like Panda which has a characteristic big head and small eyes and biologically, whenever we see anything oversized (like big eyes are attractive in a person) or a baby, which is so small with big eyes and big head, our nurturing and caring feelings awaken. (there is a release of dopamine-the love chemical whenever we see such features in animals, and psychologists call this ‘cute response’)
Its worth watching: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b053d3b0/super-cute-animals
I think cuteness definitely is a factor (I prefer dogs to snails for instance). Although, an animal like a dog displays emotion, affection, intelligence and can have a personality etc. I find these characteristics are much more desirable as you can form a bond with the pet.

I think nearly all animals are cute when they are born! Most animals remain cute as they get older however some don’t!
