Alot of efforts are being made in order to reduce pollution from mobile sources including primary regulation and expanding regulation to new sources, increased fuel efficiency conversion to cleaner fuels (such as bioethanol, biodiesel, or conversion to electric vehicles) etc, etc.
But it is going to take quite some time to get a pollution free environment, particularly in developing countries. Can’t give you the exact time frame but it is progressing.

I feel as long as people are committed to lowering pollution levels we’re heading in the right direction. Lead fuel was banned and CFCs have been banned. Pollution will most likely continue to be an issue but society is getting better about dealing with it.
